Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most spectacular and culturally immersive Himalayan journeys. Circling the world’s eighth-highest mountain, Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), this trek offers a remarkable combination of raw wilderness, spiritual charm, and cultural authenticity. Far less commercialized than the Everest or Annapurna regions, Manaslu remains a sacred haven for those seeking peace, challenge, and connection with the ancient traditions of the mountains.

Starting from Soti Khola, the trail gradually ascends along the Budhi Gandaki River, winding through lush subtropical forests, suspension bridges, and terraced fields before transitioning into high alpine terrain. Each village; Machha Khola, Jagat, Namrung, Sama Gaon, unveils a new layer of Himalayan life, where stone-built houses, yak caravans, and prayer wheels still define daily rhythms.

The trek lies within the Manaslu Conservation Area, a pristine ecosystem home to snow leopards, Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, and rare plant species. The transition from warm valleys to icy highlands offers trekkers a breathtaking diversity of landscapes; from bamboo groves to glaciers.

Culturally, Manaslu is a living museum of Tibetan heritage. You’ll pass ancient monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, mani walls carved with mantras, and friendly villagers whose lives revolve around Buddhism. Sama Gaon and Samdo; the last settlements before the high pass; offer time to acclimatize and interact with the locals, often over warm butter tea or stories of traders who once crossed into Tibet.

The climax of the journey is the Larkya La Pass (5,160 m); a thrilling traverse that rewards trekkers with jaw-dropping views of Manaslu, Cheo Himal, Himlung, and Annapurna II. Crossing this pass is both a physical and emotional highpoint, symbolizing endurance and spiritual achievement. The descent leads through snowfields and alpine valleys to Bimthang and Dharapani, where pine forests and glimpses of civilization welcome you back to the lower hills.

With its balanced mix of adventure, culture, and serenity, the Manaslu Circuit Trek perfectly represents what Kami Rita Sherpa and team stand for; authentic Himalayan experiences guided by experts who have walked these trails countless times.

This 15 to 17 day journey is ideal for trekkers seeking a more serene and quieter alternative to Annapurna or Everest, yet one that delivers equal grandeur. Lodges along the trail are now comfortable and well-managed, offering warm meals and cozy rooms even in the remotest corners.

Preparation and Considerations:

Physical Fitness:

Build stamina and endurance through regular cardio (running, cycling, hiking) and leg-strength exercises 6–8 weeks before departure. Train on hilly or uneven terrain with a loaded backpack to simulate trek conditions.

Acclimatization:

The trek crosses several high points above 4,000 m. Stay hydrated, ascend gradually, and spend extra nights at Sama Gaon and Samdo for proper acclimatization. Diamox may be used if recommended by a doctor.

Best Seasons:

Spring (March–May): Blooming rhododendrons, clear skies, and moderate temperatures.
Autumn (September–November): Stable weather, crisp air, and crystal-clear mountain visibility.
Avoid winter (Dec–Feb) due to heavy snowfall and potential closure of Larkya La Pass.

Permits Required:

  • Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Required between Jagat and Dharapani.

  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
A minimum of two trekkers accompanied by a licensed guide is mandatory for this region.

Hot showers and limited Wi-Fi are available in some lower regions for a small fee.

Health and Safety:

  • Hydration: Drink 3–4 liters of purified or boiled water daily.

  • Altitude Sickness: Watch for symptoms such as headache, nausea, or dizziness. Descend immediately if symptoms persist.

  • First Aid: Guides carry basic medical kits; trekkers should bring personal medication.

  • Insurance: Ensure your travel insurance covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.

Financial Preparedness:

Carry sufficient Nepalese Rupees (NPR) in small denominations for meals, snacks, or personal purchases.
ATMs are unavailable beyond Arughat and Besisahar.

Tipping Guidelines:

  • Guides: 400$ minimum.

  • Remove shoes before entering homes, monasteries, or temples.

  • Always walk clockwise around stupas and mani walls.

  • Dress modestly; avoid revealing or tight clothing in villages.

Environmental Considerations:

The Manaslu region is a fragile mountain ecosystem under conservation protection. Follow Leave No Trace principles.
Use refillable water bottles and purification tablets instead of buying plastic bottles.
Dispose of waste responsibly, respect local recycling efforts, and avoid disturbing wildlife.

Climate change affects glacier conditions and trail stability; stay updated through your guide on the latest weather and pass status.
